Session Proposal

We in the ACTFL Small Undergraduate German Programs Special Interest Group are a group of ca. 250 faculty members at small undergraduate institutions who are seeking ways to strengthen our programs, increase our enrollments, improve articulation and accelerate dialogue with each other.

To this end, the sessions sponsored by our SIG at ACTFL are a primary activity.

During the SIG breakfast we discuss topics relevant to small undergraduate German programs.

See: Session Guidelines

The call for papers for the ACTFL meeting seeks presenters who wish to address relevant aspects of the general concerns of small undergraduate German programs. The topic of the presentation is open, although members have expressed considerable interest in such themes as the use of and benefits derived from international German language examinations within our programs, cooperative work with high school feeder programs, the impact of technology on instruction, and creative/innovative ideas for courses as well as broader areas of the curriculum.

Presentations should be held to approximately 10 minutes, thus allowing ample time for both a broad offering of ideas and substantial, subsequent discussion of those ideas.

ACTFL guarantees us two sessions, one of which--usually designated a business meeting, which can be held in conjunction with a complimentary breakfast if convention services are available--will always be devoted to the "business" of getting to know each other and to outlining issues significant to us.

The second session follows a traditional presentation and discussion format. Our SIG can request one further session of presentations, but it is not guaranteed.

Please prepare a one-page abstract of your proposed presentation and email it to all SIG officers:

Paula Hanssen (hanssen@webster.edu)

Gregory H. Wolf (ghwolf@noctrl.edu)

Beverly Moser (moserba@appstate.edu)

Lawrence Glatz (glatz@mscd.edu)

by January 15th before each ACTFL meeting.

We will evaluate them, inform you of our decision and set up the program.

If chosen, you would be on the ACTFL program. ACTFL membership is required of those on the program so please either renew your membership or join ACTFL now at http://www.actfl.org. This is also important as we need to maintain at least 50 ACTFL current members in our SIG to continue to have our sessions at ACTFL, a big advantage since it puts you in contact with several thousand other FL educators and enables you to attend excellent sessions in your field of FL teaching. Indeed we ask you to consider ACTFL membership whether you are presenting or not since it will guarantee the continued existence of the SIG for Small Undergraduate German Programs which, we believe, is making important contributions to our profession at a time when those contributions are needed.

We do hope you will join us next year and look forward to receiving your program proposals and/or suggestions!
